Ready, set… Glow!

By Sassy Hicks

Bring on summer with our beauty tips on how to achieving a beautiful glow.

There are many great things about living in south Wales. The sense of community that still exists, our beautiful countryside with its dramatic hillsides and rolling green fields and our culture which is envied across the world are all brilliant reasons to live here- but let’s be honest – the Welsh weather isn’t one of them.

Sometimes it really does feel as if winter here lasts way longer than just one season, so there is a very good chance that you have just spent the past six months swaddled from head to foot in several layers of clothing to keep the chills at bay.

While this might be great at reducing your central heating bills, it’s no so great for your skin, and with summer now just around the corner, affirmative beauty action needs to be taken if you are to walk onto that far flung beach with confidence.

The first step in any worthwhile summer beauty regime is to exfoliate yourself all over to increase circulation and to buff away any dead skin cells that will prevent you from gaining an even tan – fake or real.

There are several ways of shifting pesky dead skin including buffing mitts, exfoliating creams, body brushes or even simply using a rough towel to dry off vigorously after a shower, but please make sure that you follow the golden rule of starting at your feet and working your way up in circular motions in the direction of your heart to boost circulation gently and safely.

Don’t forget the backs of your hands and elbows and pay extra attention to your feet where rough skin has a tendency to accumulate.

A really good budget exfoliator that you might not have used before is a traditional Turkish Bath hamam exfoliating mitt, or ‘kese’. These are very invigorating and can be purchased online (Amazon £5).

Used with soap or shower gel, they quickly remove dead skin and give you a wonderful glow and last for months. Alternatively, if you prefer the consistency of a cream based body scrub, a tub of Coconut Body Scrub (Body Shop £13) will work wonders and its exotic scent will have you dreaming of tropical beaches long before you step foot on one.

For a luxurious touch, try the unbeatable Devils Mint Body Scrub (Elemis £27) which is the body scrub equivalent of the ice bucket challenge – zingy and sure to wake you up!

Always follow exfoliation with a good moisturiser to hydrate your skin and prep it for tanning. An excellent budget buy is the Vaseline Spray & Go Body Moisturiser (Boots £4.99) which comes in a range of fragrances and can be sprayed on straight after a shower for an instant moisture boost. With zero drying time, this beauty marvel is a must have for girls on the go.

A good mid-range body moisturiser is the No7 Cocooning Body Balm (Boots £13.50) which smells divine and has deep moisturising properties thanks to its blend of shea and cocoa butters.

For a payday treat, try the ultra luxe Stress Fix Body Lotion (Aveda £27) which will calm and soothe even the most irritated skin.

Unless you embrace the pale look, shot of colour will perk you up and make you feel summery, even if the weather is a washout. Faking it is a far healthier option than baking yourself to a crisp on a sunbed and there are so many good fake tans around these days that there is no real excuse to give into the UV rays.

We aren’t advocating that you emulate the famous ‘TOWIE Tango’ shade of orange, but instead opt for a more realistic glow that would fool anyone into thinking you have just got back from foreign climes.

A truly brilliant and affordable fake tan is the Garnier Skin Naturals Summer Body Moisturising Lotion (Boots £5.99) which has low levels of fake tan to gradually build a believable and even tan.

St tropez

The St. Tropez Naturals Self Tan Lotion (St. Tropez £26) is also a fake tan winner and was one of the very first ‘natural’ fake tans available in the UK and the large tube will last you throughout the summer months.

Of course, if prepping your body for summer all seems like too much hard work, then you are in luck, because here in south Wales we are fortunate enough to have a host of excellent professional salons that can do all the hard work for you.

Book an appointment at one of these to give yourself a boost.

Happy summer days!
